Using Facebook to Raise Money for Breast Cancer Awareness

Mobilize your Facebook friends to help you in your pink ribbon fundraising efforts

So you want to raise money for breast cancer awareness, but you’re not sure where to begin. Social media sites like Facebook can be a great tool if you use them properly. Here are some easy tips to help you use Facebook to raise money for breast cancer awareness this October:

1) Share Your Story- You have a reason you want to raise money for breast cancer awareness by supporting Komen for the Cure or participating in a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk; don’t be afraid to share it with your friends on Facebook.  Tell the story of what inspired you to get involved, whether it’s a friend or family member who has (or had) breast cancer, or if it’s your own personal battle. Perhaps you are a survivor, or know someone who is, and you want to celebrate the years you, or her, have been cancer-free. By sharing your personal experiences with your Facebook friends, you will capture their interest and inspire them to help you raise money. Post a picture of a pink ribbon on your wall or as your profile picture to draw further attention to your cause.

2) Ask your friends to help – While not all of your friends may donate to your cause, many will be willing to share your wall posts with their freinds to help spread the word about your pink ribbon fundraising efforts.  Encourage your friends to help you raise money for breast cancer awareness by each donating a small amount, from $1.00 to $5.00, reminding them that if everyone donates a little, it will add up to a lot!  As an extra incentive, why not offer pink ribbon silicone bracelets to everyone who donates?

3) Have a virtual pink ribbon jewelry party – Our pink ribbon jewelry items are big sellers and are sure to help you raise money for your cause.  Choose a few pink ribbon pins and pink ribbon bracelets that you think will be the most appealing and post pictures of them on Facebook. Let your friends know that you are selling these items to raise money for breast cancer awareness and have them message you with their orders.  You can ask them to pay for them, or to make a donation, right through PayPal.  When you send your Facebook friends their order, be sure to include a pink ribbon thank you card with a personal handwritten note to let them know how much you appreciate their support.

One of the best things about Facebook is how you can learn what matters the most to your friends, even friends you haven’t seen for a very long time. Just like you, your friends will have causes that mean a great deal to them, and they are likely to ask for your support when they are doing a fundraising walk or other fundraising event.  If we all help one another, imagine the difference we can make, not only by helping one another raise money for breast cancer awareness and for finding a cure, but also in raising awareness and funds to help fight other diseases.

If you have a Facebook fundraiser success story, please share it in the comments!
